The Sierra Club is the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit grassroots environmental organization with 1.4 million members and supporters dedicated to the preservation, protection, and exploration of the earth’s natural environment.
We are seeking students and recent graduates with a passion for protecting the environment and the ambition to make a difference for our Fall 2011 internships. These positions are perfect for someone interested in non- profit environmental policy, communications, and advocacy.
Fall interns will work directly with experienced advocates and organizers to develop and implement campaigns to protect the environment and promote the Sierra Club’s goals. Our internships are office-based (and in some cases can be home-based) and include: research, drafting reports, drafting testimony on state legislation, attending hearings by regulatory agencies and legislative committees (all in Boston), discussing our positions with the members, and other environmental projects. The start date is approximately 9/6, and a minimum 3 month commitment is required. Hours are flexible, however must be weekdays between 9 and 5
We are looking for candidates who possess the following:
· A commitment to the environment
· Strong written communication skills
· Experience using desktop publishing software and online communication tools
· An ability to work well independently and as part of a team
· A willingness to learn, flexibility, and reliability
Responsibilities (these positions may include some of the following):
· Facebook and Twitter: Maintain our presence on these key social networking sites by updating content and increasing the size of our following
· Blogging: Write regular blog postings to be published on various online sites
· Review and update content throughout our websites
· Draft new topic issue briefs and update existing ones
· Develop strategies to promote website to attract more visitors
· Help draft and edit alerts
· Work to develop new strategies
· Help produce any hardcopy publications that we may produce during the internship
· Edit direct mail copy, grant applications and reports, and major donor materials
Bottle Bill Campaign
Help us research and promote an update to our container recycling law. Research potential campaign funders, help train field volunteers, participate in potential field education effort, track media coverage, draft opeds and letters to the editor. Work on social media, help create videos and banner ads. Time commitment 10-20 hours per week.
Electric Vehicles Campaign
Research electric vehicle policies and programs at the federal, state, and local levels and help the Massachusetts chapter (and possibly other chapters) to advocate for policies that will advance the EV sector. Research opportunities to charge EVs on renewable energy sources, help organize EV events (such as upcoming National Plug-in Day), and promote opportunities for people to see new film “Revenge of the Electric Car.” Reach out to activists nationwide about other campaign opportunities. Research potential campaign funders and track EV media coverage and the reporters covering the issue. There may be opportunities to write and publish EV-related blog articles. Time commitment 6-20 hours per week.
